About Rivian
Rivian Automotive, Inc. is an American electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Irvine, California, specializing in adventure-oriented trucks, SUVs, and commercial vehicles. Founded in 2009 by RJ Scaringe, Rivian has quickly become one of the most prominent pure-play EV companies in the world. Its mission- to "Keep the World Adventurous Forever"- reflects a focus on sustainability, rugged design, and off-road performance, positioning Rivian as a leader in the electric adventure vehicle segment.
Rivian's debut models, the R1T pickup truck and the R1S SUV, share the company's proprietary R1 platform, featuring a structural battery pack and a skateboard chassis design that integrates motors, suspension, and drive electronics into a single modular unit. Both vehicles use Rivian's in-house developed dual- or quad-motor systems, delivering up to 623 kW (835 hp) and torque vectoring capability for exceptional handling and traction. With up to 505 kilometers (315 miles) of EPA-estimated range (depending on battery size), 0-100 km/h acceleration in under 3.0 seconds, and over 1,100 kg of payload capacity, the R1T set a new benchmark for electric utility performance.
In 2023, Rivian launched its second-generation R1 platform refresh featuring improved efficiency, updated software, and streamlined production for cost reduction. The company also introduced a dual-motor "Enduro" drive unit developed entirely in-house, replacing externally sourced systems. These advancements improved scalability and reliability while enhancing thermal management and vehicle range. The updated R1T and R1S now offer multiple battery options- Standard, Large, and Max Packs- with ranges extending beyond 640 kilometers (400 miles) for long-distance adventuring.
In parallel, Rivian manufactures the Electric Delivery Van (EDV) for Amazon, one of its largest investors and fleet customers. The EDV is purpose-built for urban logistics, offering modular cargo volumes and advanced safety systems. Thousands of units are already in service across North America, giving Rivian a strong foothold in the commercial EV sector. The company is also developing its next-generation mid-size platform, known as the R2 architecture, which will underpin smaller, more affordable crossovers and compact SUVs designed for global markets, with production slated to begin at Rivian's new Georgia facility in 2026.
Rivian's vehicles are assembled at its Normal, Illinois manufacturing plant- a former Mitsubishi facility retooled for electric production- with battery modules, drive units, and electronic systems largely produced in-house. The upcoming Rivian Georgia plant will serve as a cornerstone of its long-term expansion, with a projected capacity exceeding 400,000 vehicles per year once fully operational. The company also operates a vertically integrated software stack, including Rivian OS for vehicle control and over-the-air updates, and an expanding Rivian Adventure Network of fast chargers tailored for off-road and long-distance travel.
As part of its sustainability strategy, Rivian emphasizes closed-loop battery recycling, renewable energy manufacturing, and ecosystem conservation through partnerships with environmental organizations. The brand's product philosophy blends rugged capability with ecological responsibility, appealing to adventure seekers and environmentally conscious drivers alike.
