About Scout

Scout Motors is an American electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, and a wholly owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. Revived in 2022, the Scout name pays homage to the classic International Harvester Scout off-road SUV of the 1960s and 1970s- an icon of American adventure motoring. Volkswagen acquired the rights to the Scout nameplate through its purchase of Navistar International and launched the brand as an independent U.S. operation dedicated to building rugged, electric SUVs and pickup trucks designed specifically for the North American market.

Scout Motors was created to fill a gap within Volkswagen Group's global portfolio- offering purpose-built, body-on-frame electric vehicles that blend durability, off-road performance, and timeless design. Unlike VW's passenger-oriented EVs such as the ID.4, Scout vehicles will be developed from scratch on an all-new dedicated electric truck platform, engineered for heavy-duty capability, towing, and long-range adventure travel. The company's strategy emphasizes American design, engineering, and production independence while leveraging the Group's global battery and software expertise.

The brand's first two models- a midsize SUV and a pickup truck- are currently under development, with prototypes expected to debut publicly in 2025 and production scheduled to begin in 2026. Both vehicles will feature a highly modular skateboard-style chassis supporting dual-motor all-wheel drive, off-road suspension, and battery packs targeting ranges in the 500-600 kilometer (310-370 mile) range. Designed for both utility and recreation, the models will compete directly with the Rivian R1S/R1T, Ford Bronco, and Jeep Recon in the growing adventure EV segment.

Production will take place at Scout's new South Carolina assembly plant located near Columbia, representing an investment of approximately $2 billion and creating more than 4,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs. The site will also serve as a future R&D hub for battery, software, and off-road technologies within Volkswagen's North American operations. Scout's vehicles will be designed, engineered, and built entirely in the United States- marking a significant localization step for the VW Group.

Scout's design philosophy emphasizes simplicity, utility, and rugged beauty. Early teasers showcase a boxy, retro-modern aesthetic with short overhangs, large tires, and minimalist interiors- paying tribute to the original International Harvester Scout's no-nonsense character. Interiors are expected to feature durable materials, analog-inspired controls, and over-the-air software capabilities underpinned by Volkswagen's forthcoming software-defined vehicle architecture.

While specific powertrain and pricing details have yet to be announced, Scout Motors has confirmed that its vehicles will be positioned as attainable, adventure-ready EVs- not luxury vehicles- offering real-world capability for everyday owners and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Pure Electric Identity

With its upcoming all-electric SUV and pickup truck, U.S.-based production, and independent engineering approach, Scout is reimagining one of America's most beloved adventure brands for the electric age- rugged, capable, and built for the next generation of explorers.
